Amador Valley wins defensive battle

  • Mitchell Copenhaver scored on an 11-yard run and Kevan Knaggs booted the extra point in the fourth quarter, giving the Amador Valley High football team a 10-7 win over Livermore in an East Bay Athletic League football game on Oct. 18. The Dons' Michael White carried 22 times for 116 yards, also had two receptions for 26 yards. Knaggs had two catches for 25 yards and booted a 19-yard field goal for the only points of the first half.

    Vikings roll as Volpatti runs wild

  • Senior Vince Volpatti ran for 311 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries as Valley Christian routed St. Patrick-St. Vincent 40-14 in the Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division. The Vikings (4-3, 2-1), led by a strong offensive line, appear to be benefiting from having faced a tough nonleague schedule. Volpatti had scoring runs of 6, 20, 2, and 33 yards. Valley Christian ran for 408 yards on 55 carries and only completed one pass for 2 yards.

    SRV rides big plays against Granada

  • San Ramon Valley used big plays and the steady foot of Mitchell Allan in a 31-26 win over Granada in EBAL play Oct. 18. The Wolves' Matt Winaker completed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Christian Fuca and a 32-yard touchdown pass to tight end Aran Roberts, both in the second half. Allan booted back-to-back 22-yard field goals in the second half. SRV's Marcus de la Pena carried 30 times for 139 yards and a touchdown, and had four receptions for 65 yards. Granada's Javonn Williams had six receptions for 135 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown reception from Tyler Offill in the back-and-forth battle.

    California survives Zamora express

  • California overcame a huge game from Monte Vista quarterback Nikita Zamora in a 31-28 win over the Mustangs on Oct. 18. Quarterback Cameron Owen erased a 28-24 deficit with a 31-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Zamora was 20 for 30 passing for 311 yards and four touchdowns, including a stunning 81-yard completion to tight end Erik Mensendiek, which gave the Mustangs a 28-24 lead. The Grizzlies ran for 320 yards, led by Simi Hingano's 97 yards and Blake Bierwith's 82.

  • San Ramon Valley at California, football, Oct. 25, 7 p.m. -- The Wolves will look to avenge a 41-38 loss from last season when the EBAL rivals meet in a battle for sole possession of first place.

  • Granada at Foothill, football, Oct. 25, 7 p.m. -- Fresh off a bye week, the Falcons will host the tough Matadors, who have lost by a combined seven points against San Ramon Valley and California.

  • Laney at Chabot, football, Oct. 26, 6 p.m. -- The defending champion Gladiators (4-2, 1-0) will host the arch-rival Eagles (4-2, 1-0) in a battle that could prove to decide the Golden Gate Conference championship.

  • Jackson Crose, Livermore cross country -- Crose finished third in the boys varsity race at the EBAL Center Meet at Newhall Park in Concord with a time of 15:34.

  • Vince Volpatti, Valley Christian football -- Volpatti ran for 311 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-14 win over St. Patrick/St. Vincent on Oct. 18.

  • Belinda Hu, Dougherty Valley golf -- Hu was the medalist at the Diablo Foothill Athletic League tournament by shooting a 1-under 70 at Diablo Creek Golf Course.

  • Brooke Starn, Monte Vista cross country -- Starn won the girls varsity race at the EBAL Center Meet at Newhall Park in Concord on Oct. 16, running a 3.0-mile course in 17 minutes, 58 seconds. Granada won the girls team title.
