The Bishop O'Dowd high girls volleyball team knew it would be in for a test on Oct. 31 in a West Alameda County Conference clash on the road against Berkeley, and the Dragons passed with flying colors.
They clinched the WACC-Foothill Division title, beating the second-place Yellowjackets 25-23, 25-18, 25-17.
Bishop O'Dowd (20-8, 14-0 WACC) relied heavily on the combination of setter Lizzie Counts to outside hitter Bryanna Davis as Counts set up Davis for 20 kills, including eight in the first set.
The Dragons needed all eight of those kills as the Yellowjackets (17-11, 12-2 WACC) nearly overcame a 23-17 deficit to steal the set.
"They've started to connect very well," Bishop O'Dowd coach Chad Salcido said of Counts and Davis. "They like each other's tempo no matter the side of the court and they seem to work well together."
Bishop O'Dowd is hoping to be the No. 1 seed in Division III when the North Coast Section brackets are set Nov. 10.
Bishop O'Dowd 21, Berkeley 0: The Dragons spoiled Berkeley's homecoming as Bryce Grandison caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chris Hagmaier early in the first quarter for all the scoring Bishop O'Dowd (3-6, 2-2 WACC-Foothill) would need on Nov. 1.
"I tried to come out and do the best I could for my team," said Grandison, who finished with 168 all-purpose yards.
Berkeley fell to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The score remained 6-0 until the third quarter when Majied Bey recovered a botched screen pass and took it 15 yards for a score.
O'Dowd hosted San Leandro on Nov. 7. The results of that game were not available at press time.
