ORINDA —— Highway 24 traffic in the Caldecott Tunnel is being delayed Monday as a result of fire drills and other preparations for the scheduled opening of a new tunnel bore this weekend.
Caltrans cautions motorists not to be distracted by the presence of fire trucks and other emergency vehicles in or near the third bore — which will be temporarily closed at times -- and the soon-to-open fourth bore.
Oakland and Moraga-Orinda firefighters will finish their drills by 4 p.m. Monday. But further traffic delays for other preparations will occur between 10 p.m. Monday night and 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials had announced tentative plans to open the new bore Saturday, Sunday, or early Monday, Nov. 18. However, rain could upset that schedule by disrupting some of the final preparations, said Ivy Morrison, a fourth bore project spokeswoman.
There will be no fourth bore opening ceremony for the general public. While a small ceremony will be held Friday, it will be limited to invited guests because of the limited space for people and cars near the tunnel portals.
