Wolves rally to win

  • Matt Winaker passed for 324 yards and five touchdowns as the San Ramon Valley High football team beat host San Leandro 42-24 at Burrell Field on Nov. 16 in the first round of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs. Marcus de la Pena ran for 96 yards and a touchdown for the Wolves, who will travel to California on Nov. 23 for the quarterfinals. Junior wideout Christian Fuca had two touchdown receptions, and Ryan Murphy, Wade Wilson, and Carter Nichols each had one touchdown catch. J.J. Koski led the Wolves receivers with seven receptions for 103 yards.

    Wildcats win first NCS tennis title

  • The Dougherty Valley girls tennis team won its first NCS Division I championship with a 5-4 win over Tamalpais-Mill Valley in the championship match. The Wildcats (22-0), who also won the Diablo Foothill Athletic League title, defeated Foothill 6-1 in the semifinals. Dougherty Valley is the first current DFAL team to win the Division I girls tennis team title since Miramonte in 2003.

    California runs over Dougherty Valley

  • Blake Bierwith ran for 134 yards and scored two touchdowns, one rushing, one receiving, as California beat visiting Dougherty Valley 37-12 in the opening round of the NCS Division I playoffs on Nov. 15. Sophomore Justin Locklear ran for 64 yards and two touchdowns, and Matt Lorenz filled in well for injured quarterback Cameron Owen, competing 4 of 6 passes for 165 yards at two touchdowns.

    Valley Christian rolls in NCS playoffs

  • The Valley Christian football team crushed St. Bernard Catholic 50-18 in the NCS Division V playoffs on Nov. 15. Vince Volpatti ran for 115 yards in 12 carries, and quarterback Theman Taylor III gained 110 on 10 carries. Taylor was also 10-for-16 passing for 160 yards and three touchdowns. The No. 2-seeded Vikings (8-3) will face No. 3 Ferndale (8-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at Chabot College.

    SRV wins with Klass

  • Sisters Kat and Sarah Klass combined to score 12 goals as the San Ramon Valley girls water polo team beat Granada 24-6 on Nov. 13 in the NCS Division I semifinals. The Wolves (27-0) went on to beat Monte Vista 9-6 on Nov. 16 in the championship match.

  • Granada at De La Salle football, Nov. 22, 7 p.m. -- The No. 8 seeded-Matadors, who topped Amador Valley 24-20 in the first round, have tough task of facing the unbeaten Spartans in the NCS Division I quarterfinals.

  • NCS Meet of Champions, cross country, Nov. 23, 8:30 a.m. -- San Ramon Valley star Christine Bayliss tops the EBAL girls runners in the big meet in Hayward as runners vie for coveted spots in the state championships.

  • San Ramon Valley at California, football, Nov. 23, 7 p.m. -- The EBAL powers will meet for the second time this season in the NCS quarterfinals, after the Grizzlies prevailed over the Wolves 35-21 on Oct. 25.

    Stars of the week

  • Greta Kohlmoos, Granada water polo -- She had a game-high three goals and one assist, leading the Matadors past rival Livermore 6-3 in the NCS Division I quarterfinals on Nov. 9.

  • Theman Taylor III, Valley Christian football -- The versatile signal-caller ran for 110 yards on 10 carries, and was 10 for 16 passing for 160 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings' big win over St. Bernard Catholic.
