Highlanders place third in St. Helena The Piedmont High boys basketball team outscored St. Helena 53-22 in the second half to claim a 92-54 victory in the third-place game of the St. Helena Tournament on Dec. 7. Jordan Torio and Sean Rodriguez both scored 20 points for the Highlanders, and teammate Graham Low added 19 points, nine rebounds and five steals in the victory, which improved Piedmont's record to 3-1.
Unbeaten Pilots win Island Classic The St. Joseph Notre Dame High boys basketball team won the championship game of the Island Classic with a 63-25 victory over Acalanes on Dec. 7. Temidayo Yussuf scored a game-high 18 points, and teammate Esteban Lovato added 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, in the victory. The Pilots improved to 3-0 at press time with the victory.
Cougars finish first at Winter Soccer Classic Nicholas Kubler stopped three of the four penalty kicks he faced against Alhambra High as the Albany boys soccer team won the Bronze Division of the Winter Soccer Classic on Dec. 7. After regulation, the teams were tied 1-1, but Albany won the shootout 3-1. Quinn Brashares tied the score for Albany at the 54th minute with a goal. Kubler finished with five saves in the match, as Albany improved to a perfect 4-0-0 this season.

On deck Elite Shootout, girls basketball, Dec. 13-14 -- This two-day girls basketball event at Laney College has a number of the top teams in Northern California and the state. Friday's games start with Skyline vs. Bradshaw Christian at 4 p.m., followed by McClatchy-McClymonds (5:30 p.m.), Brookside Christian-Vanden (7 p.m.) and Lynwood-Archbishop Mitty (8:30 p.m.). Saturday's games start with Kennedy-Sacramento vs. Dougherty Valley at 10:30 a.m., followed by Mitty-Brookside Christian (noon), Skyline-Monterey Trail (1:30 p.m.), Vanden-St. Ignatius (3 p.m.), Bradshaw Christian-Salesian (4:30 p.m.), Christian Brothers-St. Mary's (6 p.m.) and Bishop O'Dowd-Lynwood (7:30 p.m.). El Cerrito vs. Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton at De Anza High, football, Dec. 14, 7:30 p.m. -- After winning the first North Coast Section football title in school history, the Gauchos are aiming to win this California Interscholastic Federation Division III Northern California regional and advance to the Division III state championship game.

Austin Harris, St. Mary's boys basketball -- The 6-foot-5 freshman scored a game-high 23 points in the Panthers' 92-48 win over Oceana on Dec. 6. Nicholas Kubler, Albany boys soccer -- The junior stopped three of the four penalty kicks he faced as Albany won a shootout 3-1 after ending regulation with a 1-1 tie with Alhambra on Dec. 7. Maddy Lewis, Alameda girls basketball -- Lewis scored a game-high 14 points as the Hornets lost 59-52 to Del Oro in the championship game of the Sonora Kiwanis Invitational on Dec. 7.
