Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter wants to give a huge thank-you to Jiva Creative for developing our beautiful new website. Please check it out at!

FAAS and Berkeley Animal Services recently sent 30 small dogs, primarily Chihuahuas, off to the Idaho Humane Society in Boise, Idaho, as part of Operation Chihuahua Express. The dogs were flown there on private planes courtesy of Wings of Rescue.

Several businesses participated by helping to pay for plane fares and loaning crates. FAAS is grateful to our three local veterinarians: Alameda Pet Hospital, Park Centre Animal Hospital and Providence Veterinary Hospital and Clinic, for paying for the FAAS shelter pets to travel to Boise. Another generous business, Pet Food Express, loaned Berkeley Animal Services the crates they needed to transport their dogs.

The transporting of dogs from one area of the country to another is becoming increasingly common. The Bay Area shelters are overcrowded with Chihuahuas, and there is very little demand for them. Some of our little guys and gals have been waiting for their new homes for more than five months. Other areas of the country, including Boise, can find homes for Chihuahuas and other small dogs very quickly because they are in high demand. Transporting dogs to where they are in high demand is a win-win situation for the dogs and the shelters.

One of the small dogs at FAAS that wasn't transported to Boise is Cookie. She's a darling terrier mix that came into the shelter with what we thought was an injury. It turned out that Cookie had a bladder stone the size of a large egg that was making her incredibly uncomfortable. The stone was surgically removed, and the cost (estimated to be $1,000) was entirely covered by the FAAS Angel Fund. We are grateful to our many donors who help us save the lives of animals like Cookie with their donations to the Angel Fund. Thank you!
