Amador Valley bests Concord in Nelson

  • The Amador Valley boys basketball team beat Concord 51-43 on Dec. 19 behind Stokley Chaffee's game-high 18 points to open the Don Nelson Tournament in Dublin. The Dons pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Minutemen 27-20. Brandon Ruotolo had 12 points on four 3-pointers, and Scott Rasnick had 14 points.

    Livermore boys win thriller over Tracy

  • Senior shooting guard Austin Medeiros scored a game-high 24 points, and senior forward James Dayton had 17 points, helping the Livermore boys basketball team to a thrilling 67-66 win over Tracy on Dec. 18 in nonleague action.

    Lorenz leads Grizzlies past Ugly Eagles

  • Fresh off a successful football season, California senior captain Matt Lorenz had a game-high 24 points as the Grizzlies boys basketball team beat Clayton Valley Charter 60-54 in the first round of the Don Nelson Tournament on Dec. 19. Lorenz, the football quarterback, had six 3-pointers overall. The Grizzlies put the game away outscoring the Ugly Eagles 15-9 in the fourth quarter, improving to 5-4 on the season.

  • San Ramon Valley's boys basketball team walloped Acalanes 55-20 in nonleague action on Dec. 19 as Jerry Karczewski led a balanced offense with 15 points. The Wolves improved to 8-0 on the season.

    Mustangs boys tame Freedom in hoops

  • Seniors Rishi Satoor and Grant Jackson each had 19 points as the Monte Vista boys basketball team beat a strong Freedom squad 71-54 in nonleague play on Dec. 17. The Mustangs improved to 7-0 on the season, leading 30-19 at halftime and never looking back.

    McQuiston leads Grizzlies to triumph

  • Senior Michelle McQuiston scored 12 points and had three 3-pointers, leading the California girls basketball team to a defensive-minded 32-27 win over Rodriguez-Fairfield on Dec. 19 in the first round of the East Bay vs. North Bay tournament. The Grizzlies also got seven points from Janelle Suico, all from the free throw line.

    Monte Vista soccer teams keep on rolling

  • The Monte Vista boys and girls soccer teams remained unbeaten with convincing wins in East Bay Athletic League action on Dec. 19. The Mustangs boys team walloped California 4-1, led by Jeff Greenberg's two goals and an assist and Arman Mogharei's goal and an assist. Monte Vista improved to 9-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the EBAL. The Mustangs girls squad also routed California 5-0 on Dec. 19, to improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in league. Five different Mustangs scored, and Chelsea Barry had two assists. Scoring goals were Mallory Hromatko, Hailey Balma, Arianna Zamora, Marissa Zavoldi, and freshman Maya Nielan.

  • Logan Gruidl, Livermore soccer -- Gruidl made six saves to help the Cowboys earn a 1-1 draw with Amador Valley in EBAL action on Dec. 19.

  • Daron Jacks, Dublin basketball -- Jacks, a senior forward, had a game-high 22 points in the Gaels' 69-41 nonleague win over Ygnacio Valley on Dec. 17.

  • Rishi Satoor, Monte Vista basketball -- Satoor was 15 for 16 from the free throw line and scored 19 points in the Mustangs' win over Freedom.
