Head-Royce reaches Tom Welsh finale

  • The Head-Royce boys basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Tom Welsh Holiday Classic on Jan. 4, where the Jayhawks were edged 38-36 by Pinewood-Los Altos Hills. Reid Gibbs and Eian Peters paced Head-Royce, which fell to 10-1 with the loss, with 11 points apiece. Donovan Redd added nine points. Peters had a double-double with 12 rebounds. In a 53-49 semifinal win over Lick-Wilmerding-San Francisco on Jan. 3, the Jayhawks were paced in scoring by Peters with 16 points.

    St. Joseph Notre Dame tops University

  • The St. Joseph Notre Dame girls basketball team improved its record to 8-4 with a 39-33 victory over University-San Francisco on Jan. 4. A 13-5 run by the Pilots in the third quarter put the game away. The Pilots were paced in scoring by Mira Love-Sangco with 10 points.

  • Salesian at El Cerrito, boys basketball, Jan. 14, 7 p.m. -- An early-season showdown between two Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division powers who are also two of the top teams in the East Bay.

  • Berkeley at Alameda, girls basketball, Jan. 15, 7 p.m. -- Two former Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League powers meet in an early West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division game.

  • Chris Fetterolf, Piedmont boys basketball -- Fetterolf scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and passed for three assists in the Highlanders' 73-59 victory over Gateway-San Francisco on Jan. 4.

  • Eian Peters, Head-Royce boys basketball -- Peters had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the Jayhawks' 38-36 loss to Pinewood-Los Altos Hills on Jan. 4 in the championship game of the Tom Welsh Holiday Classic. Peters, who was an all-tournament pick, also scored a team-high 16 points in Head-Royce's 53-49 semifinal victory over Lick-Wilmerding-San Francisco on Jan. 3.

  • Jullian Standley, Oakland Tech boys basketball -- Standley scored a team-high 25 points in the Bulldogs' 68-60 loss to St. Joseph Notre Dame on Jan. 2.

  • Tyrell Alcorn, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Alcorn was named Most Valuable Player of the Holiday Hardwood Invitational after a 19-point, three-assist, two-steal performance in a 57-53 win over Sacramento in the championship game on Dec. 30. He also scored a game-high 20 points and added five rebounds and three steals in a 78-54 victory over Pleasant Grove-Elk Grove in the Father Kelly Tribute on Jan. 4.

  • Gabby Green, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Green scored a team-high 18 points and had 14 rebounds in the Panthers' 55-41 victory over Mater Dei-Santa Ana on Jan. 3. At that time, Mater Dei was No. 1 in the nation in the MaxPreps.com computer rankings. Green also produced 10 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in a 62-49 victory over Centennial-Corona.

  • Adrian Rico, Berkeley boys basketball -- Rico scored a game-high 27 points in the Yellowjackets' 67-50 nonleague victory over Heritage on Jan. 3.

  • Temidayo Yussuf, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Yussuf scored a game-high 26 points in the Pilots' 68-60 nonleague victory over Oakland Tech on Dec. 2.
