Piedmont pulls away for win over Tennyson

  • The Piedmont High boys basketball team outscored Tennyson 66-41 in the final three quarters of their game on Jan. 10 to win 73-58. The game was tied at 7 at the end of the first quarter. Jordan Torio led a balanced Highlanders scoring effort with 14 points. Sean Rodriguez and Atu Ohuafi scored 12 and 11 points respectively for Piedmont in their West Alameda County Conference-Shoreline Division opener.

    Pilots beat El Cerrito, Marin Academy

  • The St. Joseph Notre Dame High girls basketball team opened last week with a 46-24 win over Marin Academy. Alyssa Gable led all scorers with 18 points, and she also had four steals for the Pilots. In a 46-10 victory over El Cerrito to open the Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division season, Savannah Fisher had a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 13 rebounds for St. Joseph Notre Dame, and teammate Austine DeLos Santos added 12 points in the win. In a 77-43 loss to St. Mary's on Jan. 10, Mira Love-Sangco paced the Pilots with 13 points and Gable added 11.

  • The St. Mary's High girls basketball team held a 14-4 lead after one quarter and 59-31 lead after three quarters on its way to a 77-43 win over St. Joseph Notre Dame on Jan. 10. Mikayla Cowling scored a game-high 23 points and teammate Gabby Green added 20 points in the victory, which improved St. Mary's record to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division play.

  • Bishop O'Dowd at Berkeley, boys basketball, Jan. 17, 5:30 p.m. -- The visiting Dragons, who are the No. 1 team in the Bay Area News Group East Bay Boys Basketball Poll with a 7-4 record, travel to face undefeated and 10th-ranked Berkeley (11-0).

  • Salesian at St. Joseph Notre Dame, boys basketball, Jan. 17, 7 p.m. -- The Pilots face another TCAL-Rock Division challenge with the always-tough Pride. In this week's Bay Area News Group East Bay Boys Basketball Poll, St. Joseph Notre Dame is tied for sixth and Salesian is 11th.

  • Asha Thomas, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- Thomas scored a game-high 26 points, including 10 points in the fourth quarter, of the Dragons' 60-56 victory over Salesian on Jan. 11. She also produced a game-high 16 points in O'Dowd's 60-25 victory over Alameda on a WACC-Foothill Division game on Jan. 10.

  • Christopher Wright, Head-Royce boys basketball -- Wright scored a game-high 22 points and also produced eight rebounds and three assists in a 51-45 victory over College Prep in a Bay Counties League-East game on Jan. 9.

  • Tyrell Alcorn, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Alcorn exploded for 40 points, including a 19 for 20 performance from the free-throw line, in the Gauchos' 87-77 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent in a TCAL-Rock Division game on Jan. 10.

  • Mikayla Cowling, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Cowling produced a game-high 23 points in the Panthers' 77-43 victory over St. Joseph Notre Dame in a TCAL-Rock Division game on Jan. 10.

  • Temidayo Yussuf, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- The 6-foot-7 senior power forward, who has signed with Long Beach State, produced a pair of double-doubles in two big Pilots victories last week. He poured in 27 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 55-49 victory over El Cerrito in a TCAL-Rock Division opener on Jan. 8, then he had 29 points and 16 rebounds in a 63-43 win over St. Mary's on Jan. 19.
