Alameda earns blowout wins The Alameda High School's girls basketball team had a couple of overwhelming victories last week. In a 74-20 win over Tennyson on Jan. 29, Lisa Bertholdt scored a game-high 15 points and teammate DeJa Johnson-Ford added 13 points in a balanced Hornets scoring effort. Maddy Lewis added 13 assists for Alameda in the win. Johnson-Ford poured in a game-high 16 points, and both Elizabeth Wong and Tatianna Kelly added 11 points for Alameda in a 66-29 win over San Lorenzo on Jan. 31.
Seyranian scores 30 in Piedmont win Piedmont High School girls basketball player Lauren Seyranian poured in 30 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in an 80-32 victory over Arroyo on Jan. 31 . She also had 10 rebounds and five assists in the victory, in which Piedmont took a 40-27 halftime lead. Teammate Bailey Thompson added 17 points. In a 61-31 win over Mt. Eden on Jan. 29, Seyranian had 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Cowling, Green named All-Americans St. Mary's High School's Mikayla Cowling and Gabby Green were both selected as McDonald's All-Americans on Jan. 29. St. Mary's is the only high school this year to produce two McDonald's All-Americans on the girls roster. Green and Cowling, who are both Cal signees, are part of the West team that will play the East squad on April 2 at the United Center in Chicago.
On deck Alameda at Encinal, boys basketball, Feb. 7, 7 p.m. -- Alameda will try to even up the season series between these two rivals, while Encinal will look for a season sweep between the two teams. On Jan. 10, Encinal beat Alameda 63-46. Bishop O'Dowd at Berkeley, girls soccer, Feb. 7, 6 p.m. -- The Yellowjackets and Dragons are ranked second and fourth respectively in this week's Bay Area News Group East Bay High School Girls Soccer Rankings. On Jan. 10, Berkeley defeated host Bishop O'Dowd 1-0. Salesian vs. St. Mary's at Albany High, girls basketball, Feb. 8, noon -- In this battle of Bay Area superpowers, St. Mary's will look to avenge a 64-63 loss to the Pride on Jan. 22.
Stars of the week DeJa Johnson-Ford, Alameda girls basketball -- Johnson-Ford produced 13 points in a 74-20 win over Tennyson on Jan. 29 and a team-high 16 points in 66-29 win over San Lorenzo on Jan. 31. Temidayo Yussuf, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Yussuf scored a game-high 18 points and also had 15 rebounds and three blocks in a 53-31 win over Bentley on Feb. 1. The Long Beach State-bound Yussuf also had a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds in a 79-53 victory over Pinole Valley on Jan. 31. Asa Allen, Berkeley boys basketball -- Allen scored a team-high 16 points in the Yellowjackets' 94-60 nonleague victory over Kennedy-Richmond on Feb. 1. Ivan Rabb, Bishop O'Dowd boys basketball -- Rabb scored a game-high 24 points in a 103-66 nonleague victory over Sacramento on Feb. 1. Lauren Seyranian, Piedmont girls basketball -- The UC Davis-bound Seyranian scored 30 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and passed for five assists in an 80-32 win over Arroyo on Jan. 31. She also had 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 61-31 victory over Mt. Eden on Jan. 29. Nick Sternad, Albany boys basketball -- Sternad scored a career-high 23 points, including a 13 for 15 performance from the free-throw line, in the Cougars' 88-72 victory over John Swett on Jan. 31.
