Regional National Science Bowl Competition: Local students gathered Jan. 25 at Las Positas College in Livermore to participate in a regional competition for young scientists, mathematicians, physicists and engineers. The team from Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon won the top spot to advance to the finals. The winning team members are Augustine Chemparathy, Saranesh Prembabu, Wesley Wang, Bibhav Poudel and Rishi Krishnan. Their coach is Cathy Huang. The team will get an expense-paid trip to the Department of Energy's National Science Bowl competition in Washington, D.C., in April.

Local Runner Wins 2014 USA 100-Mile Trail Championships: The Rocky Raccoon 100-mile trail run, in Hunstville, Texas, is the premier U.S. 100 mile trail championship event. The U.S. men's and women's fastest 100-mile trail times have previously been clocked at this event with the men's time coming in at 12:44:33 and the women's time at 14:57:18, respectively. This year Matthew Laye, a 1999 graduate of Granada High School in Livermore, took the win (13:17:42) in his first 100-mile race.

Tri-Valley Teachers Stipend Award: The Tri-Valley Branch of the California Retired Teachers Association has awarded fifteen stipends of $150 each to Tri-Valley teachers. Selected were: Dublin -- Kate Deloache; Shaun Martins; Lu Middleton; Jonathan Ulrich. Livermore -- Janet Baccus; K. Barcelona/P. Baker; Ann Brown; Katelyn Medina; Karen Shepard; Lindsay Milligan. Pleasanton -- Tony Battilega et al; Emely Correia; Carol Kato; Renee Ogle; Abbie Rockwell.
