Four O'Dowd athletes commit to colleges Four athletes from Bishop O'Dowd High solidified their college intentions on Feb. 5. Andrew Melendez (cross country/track) and Samantha Koepp (soccer) signed letters of intent with Santa Clara and South Dakota State respectively, while Taylor Hobbs (soccer) and Alexander Holme (football) are headed to Ivy League schools (Yale and Columbia, respectively). Piedmont's Kesy Platt (soccer) also signed a letter of intent with Sonoma State.
Yellowjackets pull away in second half The Berkeley High boys basketball team outscored San Leandro 43-30 in the second half after trailing 29-25 at halftime on Jan. 7. Adrian Rico scored 20 points in the win for the Yellowjackets. Teammates Bryan Morris and Casey Roquemore scored 18 and 11 points respectively. Asa Allen added 11 rebounds and Reed Thomas-McLean had 10 of his own.
Hameed signs with Washington State Alameda High football player Sulaiman Hameed signed with Washington State on Feb. 5 as part of four Hornets who signed letters of intent. Keelan Doss (UC Davis -- football), Sara Jo Ciapponi (Fresno State -- soccer) and Justine Silver (Cal State Northridge -- soccer) also signed letters of intent. Encinal soccer players Alex SiFuentes and Cici SiFuentes both signed with Sonoma State.
On deck Berkeley at Bishop O'Dowd, girls basketball, Feb. 14, 5:30 p.m. -- This showdown could decide the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division title. Bishop O'Dowd defeated Berkeley 56-47 on Jan. 17 in their first conference game this season. Alameda at Piedmont, girls basketball, Feb. 18, 5:30 p.m. -- An important game for both teams as they look towards probable North Coast Section playoff bids. Alameda defeated Piedmont 66-50 on Jan. 25.
Stars of the week Jimmy Almgren-Bell, Head-Royce boys basketball -- Almgren-Bell scored a game-high 16 points, including two three-pointers, in the Jayhawks' 58-43 win over Valley Christian on Feb. 7. He also had a game-high 22 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in a 57-48 win over College Prep on Feb. 5. Lauren Seyranian, Piedmont girls basketball -- The UC Davis-bound Seyranian scored 31 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and passed for seven assists in a 61-41 win over Castro Valley on Feb. 7. She also produced 30 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in a 73-29 victory over San Leandro on Feb. 5. Asha Thomas, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- Asha Thomas scored a team-high 15 points, including four three-pointers, in Bishop O'Dowd's 65-50 win over Alameda on Feb. 7. Mikayla Cowling, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Cowling has a team-high 17 points in St. Mary's 62-51 loss to Salesian on Feb. 7. Sean Cunningham, Alameda boys basketball -- Cunningham scored a team-high 20 points in the Hornets' 60-56 loss to Encinal on Feb. 7. Alyssa Gable, St. Joseph Notre Dame girls basketball -- Gable scored a game-high 15 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds in the Pilots' 56-46 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Feb. 7. Adrian Rico, Berkeley boys basketball -- Rico scored a team-high 20 points in the Yellowjackets' 68-59 win over San Leandro on Feb. 7. Jordan Santa Maria, Encinal boys basketball -- Santa Maria scored a team-high 25 points in the Jets' 60-56 win over Alameda and 16 points in a narrow 61-60 win over San Lorenzo.
