Fusion energy is focus of free March 3 talk
The power and potential of fusion energy will be the topic of an upcoming talk by a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researcher at Las Positas College on March 3.
During his lecture, Dr. Frederico Fiuza, a Lawrence postdoctoral fellow in the lab's Fusion Energy Sciences Program, will explain how large-scale computer simulations are playing a critical role in fusion research. The presentation is part of the annual Science and Engineering Seminar Series and takes place in the school's Multi-Disciplinary Building Lecture Hall, Room 2420, beginning at 6 p.m. It is open to the general public and free of charge, but visitors are reminded the campus has a $2 parking fee.
Las Positas College is at 3000 Campus Hill Drive in Livermore.

Monte Vista's Gilles wins teaching award
Kimberly Gilles, a teacher at Monte Vista High School in Danville has won a top award for teaching excellence from the National Education Association Foundation.
She won the NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence and $25,000 during the NEA Foundation's Salute to Excellence in Education Gala on Feb. 7 in Washington, D.C.
During the gala, the foundation granted nearly 40 awards to outstanding educators and supporters of public education.
A veteran teacher in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District and a member of the San Ramon Valley Education Association, Gilles was nominated for the award by the California Teachers Association, which is a labor union affiliate of the National Education Association. She was chosen by her peers to win the award because "she has attained the highest teaching standards, as illustrated by her exemplary instruction, advocacy for the profession and staunch support of public education," said Harriet Sanford, president and CEO of the NEA Foundation.
She also shows a commitment to diversity in her teaching, Stanford said: "In her classroom, she shares a passion for social justice to inspire students to lift up their own voices through reading and writing."
