Spelling Bee Champions: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District held a spelling bee for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade contestants on Feb. 5 who tackled such words as "rhythm" and "spaghetti." The winners were -- first place: Ella King; second place: Staicy Robles; third place: Samuel Siegel; fourth place: Jessica Jaing. The seventh- and eighth-grade competition was held on Feb. 12. The winners were -- first place: Miriam Brown; second place: Audrey Kane; third place: Meenakshi Singhal; fourth place: Sarah Morgan. These seven students will advance to the Alameda County Competition on March 8 at Cull Canyon Middle School in Castro Valley.

Students Reach Second Level: The Tenth District of the American Legion has announced the winners of its Oratorical Contest. Christopher Azuma received $200 for first place; John Malchar received $100 for second place (both attend Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton); and Alleah Bovell, Oakland Military Institute, received $75 for third place. The prepared oration had to be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, to include Amendments, giving emphasis to the duties and obligations of a citizen. The assigned topic was the Fourth Amendment. The winners will next go to the Area 2 competition.

New Kennedy Center Intern: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts selected Rebecca Scott for its prestigious internship program. Rebecca is the daughter of Beverly and Andrew Scott, of San Ramon, and attends UC Santa Cruz, majoring in music and politics. In her internship as a General Press intern, Rebecca works with several members of the JFK Center's Press Office. Her various duties include cataloging news coverage, assisting with events and researching media outlets.
