EBAL boys soccer teams roll in NCS

  • Four East Bay Athletic League boys soccer teams advanced to the North Coast Section Division I semifinals with wins on Feb. 22. Jeff Greenberg and John Austin Ricks scored goals as Monte Vista topped Richmond 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Charles Zaloumis assisted both Mustangs' goals. Amador Valley, the No. 6 seed, upset No. 2 Pittsburg 3-2 in overtime. San Ramon Valley beat Berkeley 1-0 on a goal by John Wayland in the 43rd minute, and No. 1 seed De La Salle took down Newark Memorial 3-0. The Feb. 26 semifinals took place after this newspaper went to press.

    Foothill twins take wrestling titles

  • The Foothill wrestling team took second place in the EBAL tournament as the Knatt twins, Arthur and Troy, each earned championships, along Kohlton Clark at 287 pounds. Troy Knatt won the 162-pound championship, and Arthur Knatt triumphed at 172 pounds. Livermore had four individual champions: Aaron Cortez (122), Jacob Roach (154), Cody McNaney (197) and Matthew Neale (222). David Pinto won the 140 title for San Ramon Valley. Granada's Angel Beltran earned host Granada its lone title, at 147. Michael McDaniel won the 115 title for Monte Vista.

    Dublin boys advance to NCS semifinals

  • The Dublin boys soccer team, seeded third, beat No. 6 Hayward 3-0 on Feb. 22 in the NCS Division II quarterfinals. The Gaels topped No. 14 Mt. Diablo 2-1 in the first round on Feb. 19. Gaels senior Dominik Katunaric had a goal and an assist against the Farmers, and Suliman Khorami and Anthony Herrington had goals. Dublin improved to 20-2-3.

    SRV, Monte Vista advance to semifinals

  • No. 2 seed San Ramon Valley walloped Deer Valley 8-0 in the NCS Division I girls soccer quarterfinals on Feb. 22, and No. 1 seed Monte Vista beat Freedom 4-0. The Wolves' Rachel Speros led the way with three goals in her team's win.

    Mustangs clinch outright title

  • The Monte Vista boys basketball team upended rival San Ramon Valley 56-45 on Feb. 20 to clinch the outright EBAL title and avenge a loss to the Wolves. Trevor John led the Mustangs with 22 points, and Spencer Rust and Grant Jackson had 15 points apiece. Jerry Karczewski and David Gunn each had 11 points for the Wolves.

  • NCS championships, boys wrestling, Feb. 28-March 1, 9 a.m. -- Granada star Angel Beltran, the runner-up at 138 pounds last year, will be among the favorites in the 145 division at the double-elimination meet at Newark Memorial High. The top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the state tourney.

  • Ryan Knop, Foothill golf -- Knop shot a 1-under 34 as the Falcons beat Marin Academy 190--213 in nonleague action on Feb. 19 at the Castlewood Country Club Hill Course.

  • Luis Ramirez, Granada basketball -- Ramirez had a team-high 18 points as the Matadors bested rival Livermore 81-72 to complete the EBAL regular season with a 7-7 league mark on Feb. 21.

  • Trevor John, Monte Vista basketball -- John had a game-high 22 points as the Mustangs beat rival San Ramon Valley on Feb. 21.

  • Rachel Speros, San Ramon Valley soccer -- Speros had a hat trick in the Wolves' 8-0 win over Deer Valley in the NCS Division I girls soccer quarterfinals.
