Berkeley baseball starts season strong

  • The Berkeley High School baseball team started the season strong with an 11-1 win against Richmond on Feb. 21 in the team's season debut. The Yellowjackets scored runs in four different innings, with Xavier Williams hitting a home run in the fourth with one on and Miles Cohen going 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Noah Bremer pitched four innings and got the win.

    St. Joseph Notre Dame wins TCAL title

  • St. Joseph Notre Dame High School won the Tri-County Athletic League boys basketball playoffs championship game with a 62-46 win over Salesian on Feb. 22. Temidayo Yussuf scored 23 points and also had 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals. Lamont Banks added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Pilots.

    Oakland Tech wins OAL boys soccer title

  • The Oakland Tech High School "A" boys soccer team wrapped up an undefeated Oakland Athletic League season with a 4-3 victory over Skyline on Feb. 20. Elmer Hernandez produced a hat trick for the Bulldogs, including the winning goal in the last minute of the game. Shola Amherd had the other goal for Oakland Tech, which finished the OAL season with a 9-0-1 record.

    Head-Royce falls in BCL-East boys final

  • The Bay Counties League-East boys basketball playoffs championship game went into overtime, with Bentley defeating Head-Royce 58-53 on Feb. 22. The Jayhawks led 24-21 at halftime, but the Phoenix came back, outscoring Head-Royce 37-29 in the final two periods and overtime. Chris Wright, who scored 13 points in the loss, and Eian Peters, who had 10, were named to the All-Tournament team for the Jayhawks.

    College Prep comes up short in title game

  • After advancing to the championship game in the BCL-East playoffs, the College Prep girls basketball team lost 63-29 to Valley Christian on Feb. 22. Haley Bitzer and Kemi Oladipo were both named to the All-Tournament team for the Cougars.

  • North Coast Section championships, wrestling, Feb. 28 - March 1, 9 a.m. -- The best wrestlers from the section will gather at Newark Memorial High School to compete for the right to go to the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships next week.

  • Mikayla Cowling, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Cowling scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 76-57 loss to Salesian in the Tri-County Athletic League playoff championship game on Feb. 22.

  • Desire Finnie, Berkeley girls basketball -- Finnie scored a team-high 24 points and had 13 rebounds for a double-double in Berkeley's 64-52 win over Piedmont on Feb. 21.

  • Matthew Canalin, Encinal boys basketball -- Canalin scored a game-high 23 points, including three three-pointers, in the Jets' 58-50 win against Piedmont on Feb. 21.

  • Elmer Hernandez, Oakland Tech boys soccer -- Hernandez's three goals helped lift the Bulldogs to a 4-3 victory over Skyline on Feb. 20 to end their league season undefeated.
