Valley students advance to state spelling bee: Nearly 50 students competed March 8 in the Alameda County Elementary and Junior High Spelling Bee, vying for the top two spots in each division and the opportunity to move on to the state spelling bee. Local winners in the Junior High Spelling Bee were -- first place (tie): Karah Pedregosa, eighth grade, Fallon Middle School (Dublin) and Meenakshi Singhal, eighth grade, Mendenhall Middle School (Livermore); third place: Ashton Lam, eighth grade, Pleasanton Middle School (Pleasanton); fourth place: Sarah Morgan, eighth grade, Mendenhall Middle School (Livermore). Karah and Meenakshi will represent Alameda County at the State Junior High Spelling Bee on May 3 at Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael.
Rank of Eagle Scout: Austin Greth has been approved by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America for advancement to the rank of Eagle Scout, scouting's highest award. For his Eagle project, he designed and built landscaping of a large area in front of St. Augustine's church in Pleasanton that included installing a drip irrigation system, plants and a stone path.
He is the son of Kathy and Alan Greth, of Pleasanton, and a junior at Amador Valley High School. The Eagle badge is to be presented at an Eagle Court of Honor on Sunday in Pleasanton.
