Bremer fires 1-hitter in win over Albany

  • Berkeley High School pitcher Noah Bremer allowed only a solo home run to Albany's Liam Knowles in a 2-1 nonleague baseball victory on March 15. Bremer struck out 15 batters for the win. Parker Denison and Alex Rowland drove in runs for a two-run third inning for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 6-2 in this young season with the win.

    O'Dowd offense excels at tourney

  • The Bishop O'Dowd softball team averaged almost seven runs a game in winning three of its five games at the Chico Tournament on March 14-15. The Dragons started with a 9-6 win over Shasta, as Promise Burnett and Olivia Olmos combined for eight hits in eight at-bats. Then O'Dowd beat Wheatland 8-6 behind a 3 for 3 game from Marissa Eckman, which included a home run and two RBI. After a 9-2 loss to Chico, O'Dowd outscored Enterprise-Redding 10-9. Both Burnett and Olmos were 3 for 4 and combined for seven RBI. In their final tournament game, O'Dowd lost to Pleasant Valley-Chico 11-5. Olmos and Haley Ferrufino-Jurs were both 2 for 3 and combined for three RBI.

    Encinal team falls in NorCal quarterfinals

  • The Encinal High girls basketball team were edged 58-54 by Vanden-Fairfield in a California Interscholastic Federation Division III Northern regional quarterfinal on March 15. The teams were tied at 40 at the end of the third quarter before Vanden was able to get an edge in the final period. Brianne Taylor scored a team-high 17 points, and also had eight assists and three steals. Teammate Destiny Kelly had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Encinal finished the season with a record of 20-9.

  • California Interscholastic Federation Northern regional finals, basketball, March 22, TBA -- Among the teams that advance to the finals are the Bishop O'Dowd boys (Open Division, finals start at 8 p.m. at Sleep Train Arena-Sacramento), the St. Joseph Notre Dame boys (Division V, noon, American Canyon High), and the Berkeley girls (Division I, 2 p.m., Sleep Train Arena).

  • Mikayla Cowling, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Cowling scored a game-high 17 points, including two 3-pointers, and also had 10 rebounds and three assists in the Panthers' 48-32 victory over Sacramento in the opening round of the CIF Open Division Northern regionals on March 14.

  • Sayeed Pridgett, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Pridgett scored a team-high 23 points for El Cerrito in their 67-58 loss to Archbishop Mitty-San Jose in the first round of the CIF Open Division Northern regionals on March 14.

  • Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman, Berkeley girls basketball -- Welch-Coleman connected on nine of 10 free throws in overtime to lead the Yellowjackets to a 68-62 victory over McClatchy-Sacramento in an CIF Division I Northern regional quarterfinal on March 15. The junior point guard scored a game-high 27 points in the victory. In a 64-40 first-round win over Skyline on March 12, she scored 16 points.

  • Lauren Seyranian, Piedmont girls basketball -- Seyranian scored a game-high 20 points and also had eight rebounds and six assists in a 48-30 win over Castilleja-Palo Alto in the first round of the CIF Division IV Northern regionals on March 12. She also produced 20 points and 12 in a 46-45 quarterfinal victory on March 16.
