Jets reach final of Willie Stargell Classic

  • The Encinal High School baseball team advanced to the Willie Stargell Easter Classic championship game on April 5, where it fell 3-1 to Heritage. Kaleo Johnson slammed a solo home run for the Jets' only run and a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Heritage scored its first two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. Encinal advanced to the championship game with a 4-1 win over Dougherty Valley on April 3. Johnson and teammates Kealii Pedro and Nick Solis were named all-tournament. Alameda High's all-tournament players were Alex Vick and Trevor Greenley.

    Nesbitt, Farley combine for 1-hitter

  • Bishop O'Dowd High senior pitchers Channing Nesbitt and Shane Farley allowed only one hit in a 4-0 nonleague victory over Oakland Tech on April 3. Nesbitt struck out eight batters in five innings, and Farley had two strikeouts in two innings on the mound. Nesbitt was also 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Nick Adgar and Peter Johann also drove in runs for the Dragons.

    Panthers excel at Stanford Invitational

  • The St. Mary's High girls track and field foursome of Carly Schulz, Spencer Moore, Zoie Campbell and Chloe Jenkins won both the 3,200-meter relay (9 minutes, 22.56 seconds) and the 1,600 relay in 3:53.26 Saturday at the Stanford Invitational. The 3,200 relay time was announced as the fastest time in the state this season for the event. In addition, St. Mary's senior Ja'Vion Robinson was victorious in the boys 110 high hurdles final with a personal-best time of 14.48, and Skyline's Destiny Smith-Barnett won the girls 100 final by .39 with an impressive time of 11.84.

  • Berkeley at Arroyo, baseball, April 11, 4 p.m. -- The Yellowjackets and Dons have sparkling records (9-3 and 10-1 respectively) entering this week.

  • Kaleo Johnson, Encinal baseball -- The senior accounted for the Jets' only run with a home run in a 3-1 loss to Heritage in the Willie Stargell Easter Classic championship game on April 5, and also went 2 for 2 with two solo home runs, scored four runs and had two RBIs in an 11-0 win over Skyline in the first round on March 31.

  • Thomas Lee, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys golf -- Lee earned medalist honors in the Pilots' 223-247 victory over Albany on April 3 with a score of two-over 37 at Chuck Corica GC.

  • David Na, Alameda boys golf -- Na shot a score of two-over 37 at Monarch Bay GC for medalist honors in the Hornets' tri-match victory over Castro Valley and San Leandro on April 3.

  • Channing Nesbitt, Bishop O'Dowd baseball -- The Washington signee pitched five innings of one-hit ball and struck out eight batters in a 4-0 nonleague win over Oakland Tech on April 3. He also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

  • Ja'Vion Robinson, St. Mary's boys track and field -- Robinson first set a personal record in the preliminaries of the 110-meter high hurdles at the Stanford Invitational (14.65 seconds), then improved that mark in winning the final in 14.48.

  • Destiny Smith-Barnett, Skyline girls track and field -- Smith-Barnett won the 100-meter final at the Stanford Invitational on April 5 with a time of 11.84 seconds.
