Locals impress at Arcadia Invitational A second-place invitational division finish by Skyline High School's Destiny Smith-Barnett and a seeded division win by the St. Mary's High girls 1600-meter relay team highlighted local performances at the Arcadia Invitational on April 12. Smith-Barnett placed second in the girls 100 in a wind-aided 11.64 seconds, and she was also fifth in the girls 200 invitational race (24.67). The St. Mary's girls 1600 relay squad of Spencer Moore, Carly Schulz, Zoie Campbell and Chloe Jenkins produced a winning time of 3:50.15, and it was faster than every team in the invitational division except winner Long Beach Poly (3:47.23). It is also the No. 2 time in the state for the event at press time, according to PrepCalTrack.com. St. Mary's Ja'Vion Robinson was second in the boys seeded 110 hurdles (14.16). Alameda's Cameron Tu was eighth in the seeded boys 3200 meters with an impressive time of 9:08.12, and St. Joseph Notre Dame's Gabe Arias-Sheridan was 21st in 9:17.45. Bishop O'Dowd's girls distance medley team of Emily Fieberling, Alison Heywood, Julia Cooke and Alyssa Byer finished seventh in the invitational division race in 12:15.98.
Hornets win tournament division The Alameda High School boys volleyball team won the Silver Division of the Nor-Cal Invitational on April 12 with a 5-1 record. Joey Vargas had 37 kills and 22 blocks in the tournament for the Hornets, and teammate Rowland Markheim added 36 kills, 14 blocks, 64 assists and 27 digs. David Varghese had 27 kills and 30 blocks for Alameda, which improved its overall record to 18-4 this season.

Stars of the week Leo Nierenberg, Bishop O'Dowd baseball -- The right-hander fired a two-hitter in six innings on the mound with 10 strikeouts and no walks as the Dragons beat Encinal 7-0 on April 11. He also was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored in the game. Destiny Smith-Barnett, Skyline girls track and field -- Smith-Barnett placed second in the invitational 100 meters at the Arcadia Invitational with a win-aided time of 11.64. She was also fifth in the invitational 200 in 24.67. David Na, Alameda boys golf -- Na shot a 1-under 34 on the Chuck Corica South Course for medalist honors in the Hornets' 200-274 victory over Arroyo on April 10. He also was the medalist with an even-par 35 at Chuck Corica in a 209-213 loss to Bishop O'Dowd on April 9. David Langer, Berkeley baseball -- The junior drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 2-1 victory over Arroyo on April 11. He finished the game with two hits in five at-bats. He was also 1 for 2 with a run scored in a 7-1 loss to Arroyo on April 9. Arlo Rudy, St. Mary's baseball -- Rudy was 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored, 2 RBI's and two walks in the Panthers' 10-2 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent on April 11. Maura Willow, Encinal softball -- Willow was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs in a 12-1 win over Hayward on April 9.
