Berkeley, Bishop O'Dowd split series A pair of West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division title contenders split their series last week. On April 30, Bishop O'Dowd took a 3-0 lead in the first four innings and held on for a 3-2 victory. The Dragons' Channing Nesbitt struck out seven batters in six innings on the mound, and teammates Cory Barrios and Nick Adgar both had two hits and a run batted in. Berkeley's Zachary Copeland and Shan Dhaliwal both had two hits in the loss. On May 2, Noah Bremer fired a three hitter and struck out eight batters over eight innings as Berkeley edged Bishop O'Dowd 2-1 in the eight-inning game. The Yellowjackets' Zachary Copeland drove in David Langer with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. Dragons pitcher Leo Nierenberg was also dominant, allowing only an unearned run and four hits while striking out five over seven innings. Berkeley's Darien Demery was 2 for 4 in the win, and O'Dowd's Nesbitt drove in a run on a squeeze bunt in the fourth inning.
Hansen fires one-hitter in SJND victory St. Joseph Notre Dame pitcher Robert Hansen threw a one-hitter with no earned runs, eight strikeouts and no walks as the Pilots beat John Swett 2-1 on May 1. Teammate Vincent Republicano was 1 for 2 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI in the victory. The Pilots' Danny Gonzalez and Colin Karch produced doubles in the win.

Stars of the week Sarah Lake, Berkeley girls lacrosse -- Lake scored eight goals in a 12-8 victory over visiting Ygnacio Valley on April 29. Jamal Rutledge, El Cerrito baseball -- Rutledge was 3 for 3 with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases in a 5-4 loss to St. Patrick-St. Vincent on May 2. Maddie Baum, Piedmont girls lacrosse -- Baum scored five goals and had four assists in an 11-5 victory over College Park on April 29, then had seven goals in a 12-1 comeback win over Northgate on May 2. Promise Burnett, Bishop O'Dowd softball -- Burnett was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs in the Dragons' 5-3, 8-inning win over Berkeley on May 2. She was also 2 for 3 with two RBIs in an 11-6 win over Arroyo on April 30. Isabella Deatherage, Encinal softball -- Deatherage was 3 for 7 with three RBIs in the Jets' 10-9 extra-inning victory over Arroyo. She also was 2 for 4 with a two-run home run, two runs scored and three RBIs in a 10-7 win over Castro Valley on April 30. Robert Hansen, St. Joseph Notre Dame baseball -- Hansen struck out eight batters and allowed only one hit and no earned runs in a 2-1 victory over John Swett on May 1. Drew Huie, Alameda baseball -- Huie was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in a 10-0 nonleague win over Castlemont on April 28, then went 4 for 4 with two RBIs in a 7-3 victory over Arroyo on April 30. Destiny Smith-Barnett, Skyline girls track and field -- The UNLV-bound Smith-Barnett won the 100 meters in the Sacramento Meet of Champions invitational session on May 3 with a time of 11.96 seconds that was against a very stiff 3.3 meters per second headwind.
