All animals adopted from Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) receive a coupon for the adopters to take their new pet to a veterinarian for a free wellness exam. While the animals are in the shelter, they receive their vaccinations and are monitored daily for any changes in their medical conditions. But, the newly adopted pets still need to go for their wellness exams so that the new owners can establish a routine for their new companions.

An annual wellness exam is just one step toward providing your pet with the medical care he/she needs for a lifetime of good health. When using your free exam coupon, your veterinarian can create a baseline for your new pet pal. Each year when you take your pet for a checkup, your veterinarian can make a comparison from the previous visits.

adoption weekends: If you are looking for a new pet, FAAS has two free adoption events happening in May. Our Pit Pride weekend is May 17-18. Qualified adopters will be able to take home our friendly, healthy pit bulls for FREE!

The annual Maddie's Adoption Weekend is happening on May 31 and June 1. All cats, kittens, dogs and puppies are available for free adoptions, and the Maddie's Fund reimburses FAAS $500 to $2,000 for each adoption. To adopt from FAAS, all household members must meet the new pet, and proof of homeownership or a copy of your lease is needed showing you can have a pet.

STILL TIME LEFT: Don't forget to register for Wiggle Waggle Walk! It's June 8 from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Harbor Bay Ferry Terminal. Registration is only $25 for a fun afternoon of doggy contests, great food and vendors and a scenic 1-mile walk.
