CHIME music recital scheduled for May 30

The CHIME (Citizens Highly Interested in Music Education) afterschool student music recital will be held on May 30.

Shakespeare camp to meet July 14-25

The Bay Area Shakespeare camp for children ages 7-13 will meet July 14-25 at Piedmont Community Church, 400 Highland Ave.

Camp is weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with optional aftercare until 5:30 p.m.

Scripts, materials and supplied are all included. Need-based scholarships are available.

Center for Arts offering diverse music program

Homeowners can have trees sampled for SODS

Join the effort Saturday to help prevent Sudden Oak Death Syndrome by having your back yard trees sampled by University of California researchers.

Piedmont High students will survey bay laurel trees that are hosts to the pathogen and submit the samples to the UC lab for analysis with results provided later. The laurels do not die from the disease; they are carriers.

'Volunteer of the Year' nominees being sought

The city of Piedmont is seeking nominations for the inaugural "Piedmont Civic Volunteer of the Year Award" to recognize a Piedmont resident for extraordinary service to the community. This award will be given to a Piedmonter who has made significant cultural, political, health, safety, environmental, recreational, and/or social contributions that have enriched the community. The intent of the award is to annually recognize an individual whose efforts have helped to improve the quality of life in Piedmont.

The Piedmont Civic Volunteer of the Year will be chosen by the mayor and a selection committee. Volunteer efforts during the 12-month period from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2013, will be considered.
