Dragons clinch regular-season title The Bishop O'Dowd High baseball team took a 4-0 lead in the first inning on its way to a 9-2 win over Arroyo on May 8 that clinched the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division regular-season title. The Dragons' Channing Nesbitt had an RBI single in the first inning and a towering solo home run over the center-field fence in the second inning. He finished the game 2 for 2 with two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs. Teammate Leo Nierenberg pitched 51/3 innings of shutout baseball in relief, and struck out 11 batters. The result of the first-round WACC-Foothill playoff game between Berkeley and host Bishop O'Dowd on May 13 was unavailable at press time.

Jets and Hornets split baseball series The Encinal High baseball team took a 4-2 lead in the second inning and hung on for a 4-3 victory over Alameda in a West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division game on May 6. Kealii Pedro and Nick Solis were both 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs in the victory. Pedro slammed a solo home run in the first inning and Solis had two doubles in the win. Michael Woodworth was 4 for 4 with a run scored and teammates Trevor Greenley and Drew Huie both had two hits each. The result was turned on May 8, as Alameda beat Encinal 8-1. The Hornets' Mitchell Nakahara was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs, and teammates Woodworth and Alex Vick also had two hits. Solis was 2 for 3, and teammate Mitchell Crawford had a double and an RBI for the Jets
El Cerrito, St. Mary's reach semifinals The El Cerrito and St. Mary's High baseball teams both won their Tri-County Athletic League quarterfinal games on May 9. St. Mary's defeated Hercules 9-1 behind a two-hitter from pitcher Andre Nnebe, who also went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. The Gauchos edged Albany 4-3. El Cerrito and St. Mary's met in a semifinal on May 13 after this publication went to press.
On deck Tri-County Athletic League and West Alameda County Conference finals, track and field, May 17, -- The top track and field athletes in these leagues will aim to qualify for the North Coast Section Bay Shore Area championships on May 24. The TCAL championships will be at Hercules High, and the WACC championships will be at Burrell Field in San Leandro.

Noah Bremer, Berkeley baseball -- Bremer fired a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks in a 3-0 victory over Castro Valley on May 8. Andre Nnebe, St. Mary's baseball -- Nnebe threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and only one walk, and he also went 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs in a 9-1 victory over Hercules in the TCAL playoff quarterfinals on May 9. Ariana Saghafi, Albany girls swimming -- Saghafi won the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 56.81 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (58.10) at the TCAL championship meet. Nick Solis, Encinal baseball -- Solis was 4 for 6 with a run scored and two RBIs in a pair of games against Alameda last week.
