Piedmont wins NCS Division II title It wasn't easy, but the Piedmont boys tennis team captured the NCS Division II team championship on May 17. It was the second straight team title for the Highlanders and their third in four years. Piedmont, the top-seed, beat No. 8 Fortuna 7-0 in the first round but edged Lick-Wilmerding 4-3 in the semifinals and No. 2 Branson in the championship, improving their record this year to 20-4-1.
Merritt's Brown runs record time in 100 Kemarley Brown of Merritt College in Oakland set a national junior college record with a 2014 world-leading time of 9.93 seconds in the 100 meters at the California state junior college championships on May 17 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Brown, a 21-year-old native of Jamaica who will run for Texas Christian next season, defended his state title, aided by a legal 1.8 meters-per-second trailing wind. Brown also won the 200 meters in a wind-aided 20.29 clocking.

Berkeley High crew qualifies for nationals The Berkeley High Crew's women's pair boat won the bronze medal at the US Rowing Southwest Junior Championship Regatta on May 15. All medal winning squads earned a berth to the US Rowing Youth Nationals, June 13-15 at Lake Natoma. "Our boat had a great race over a very tough field," Berkeley crew coach Chris Dadd said. "Teams from this Region have won National Championships over the past several seasons. We had a strategy that paid off and we rowed our best races of the weekend when needed, in the final."Since 2000, Berkeley has qualified for the Nationals eight times. In 2011, the men's lightweight four also reached nationals and won a bronze medal.
On deck NCS Bay Shore Championships, track and field, May 24 -- The best athletes from the Tri-County Athletic League, the Mission Valley Athletic League and the West Alameda County Conference will meet at Castro Valley High with spots at next week's NCS Meet of Champions at stake. NCS playoffs, softball, TBA -- The Encinal softball team, which finished the regular season with a 14-9 record, earned the top seed for the NCS Division III playoffs and a first round bye. The Jets will host either Eureka or Albany in the quarterfinals on May 23 or 24.
Stars of the week Joshua Hall, Bishop O'Dowd boys track and field -- Hall made a big move into the lead on his anchor leg of the 1600-meter relay as O'Dowd won the race in 3 minutes, 28.04 seconds and beat Castro Valley by one point for the West Alameda County Conference boys championship meet title on May 17. Grant Watson, College Prep boys swimming -- Watson won the 100-yard butterfly final at the North Coast Section championships on May 17 with a time of 48.98 seconds. He also won the consolation final of the 50 freestyle (21.28) and swam a leg for College Prep's second-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:06.40). Catherine Boles, Alameda girls swimming -- Boles placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle final at the North Coast Section championships on May 17 with a time of 4 minutes, 58.31 seconds. She also was eighth in the 200 freestyle final (1:52.57). Noah Bremer, Berkeley baseball -- Bremer threw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks, and also went 1 for 3 at the plate in a 1-0 loss to Bishop O'Dowd in a WACC-Foothill first-round playoff game on May 13.
