Between the Vines is a biweekly column on wine and wine making in the Livermore Valley region. This column was contributed by Brett and Monique Caires, owners of BoaVentura de Caires Winery.
Winery Name: BoaVentura de Caires
About Us: In 1999, we realized our dream of owning a winery when my wife, Monique, and I purchased a 5-acre property perched atop a sunny ridge in the southeast corner of Livermore Valley. What was once part of a 360-acre ranch owned by the Concannon family and subsequently a Livermore wine family's farm stocked with geese, chickens, sheep, goats and a donkey, is now our vineyard. The century-old farmhouse is our home, and the rustic barn is used to host tastings, weddings, parties and family gatherings.
The winery is named after my grandfather, BoaVentura Baptiste de Caires, who handed down a passion for good wine. His name translates to "good venture" in Portuguese.
Our wines: BoaVentura wines are truly handmade. The grapes are hand-picked by family and friends, and we take pride in crafting wines that BoaVentura Baptiste de Caires would be proud of. Our first wine was available to the public in 2002.
Our signature wine is cabernet sauvignon. We make five different cabernets ranging from $34 to $75 per bottle, and they are all estate-grown. We have a little more than 5,000 cab vines on the property, in addition to the port varietals tinto cao, toriga nacional, sousa and tinta amarilla.
We also offer a white table wine, a Portuguese varietal called alvarinho. I fell in love with the vino verde white wines while traveling through Spain and Portugal. It's really unlike anything we have in the United States. We blend the alvarinho a little differently every year, but it always seems to be slightly effervescent and crisp. We also produce an estate-grown traditional port style wine.
Special features: Our rustic property is very laid-back and family-oriented. It's comfy and friendly, and if you visit you'll most likely see children chasing chickens in the yard, people enjoying wine and playing bocce ball or groups of guests picnicking on the lawns. We welcome everyone including pets, and one, if not both, of us are present every single time our tasting room is open.
Every quarter we have a club release and a party for BoaVentura wine club members. Our membership is limited to 75 people, and we have a few spots available.
Hours and tasting fee: Our tasting room is open the first weekend of each month from noon to 4 p.m., and our tasting fee is $10. Please check out our online calendar at www.boaventuravineyard.com for additional dates that we're open for events.
Where is the winery? We are located at 9309 Tesla Road in Livermore. For help planning your wine tasting trip to Livermore Valley wine country, please visit www.LVwine.org.
