Hoerner pitches Head-Royce to win

  • The Head-Royce baseball team breezed through its North Coast Section Division V quarterfinal playoff game on May 23, beating St. Vincent 10-0 in five innings. Nico Hoerner was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and also pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts. Ben Hoxie was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Jayhawks. Sami Tuqan was 1 for 1 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs in the victory. The result of No. 1 seed Head-Royce's semifinal game against No. 4 Stuart Hall on May 27 was unavailable at press time.

    Pair of Pilots teams move on in playoffs

  • Both the St. Joseph Notre Dame baseball and softball teams advanced to the North Coast Section Division V semifinals on May 28. Results were unavailable at press time. The Pilots baseball team received a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts and no walks from Robert Hansen in a 3-0 quarterfinal victory over Bentley on May 23. Teammate Angel Munoz was 2 for 3, and Joseph Ratto hit a double for the third-seeded Pilots, who traveled to face No. 2 Branson in the semifinals. St. Joseph Notre Dame also shut out South Fork 7-0 in the first round on May 20. Steve Manzo and Satchel Fisher combined on a four-hitter, and Hansen went 3 for 3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in the win. Teammate Angel munoz was 2 for 2 with a run scored.

    The Pilots softball team beat Valley Christian 11-2 to advance to the Division V semifinals. Anekalia Crevani struck out eight batters and also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, and two runs scored. Teammate Gina Bonardi was 3 for 5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. St. Joseph Notre Dame, the No. 5 seed, beat No. 12 Urban 13-3 in the first round. Bonardi and Crevani both had three hits in the win, and Crevani had a home run and three RBIs. Teammate Eileen Rhatigan was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and four RBIs and a triple in the victory.

  • NCS Meet of Champions, track and field, May 30-31 -- The top three placers in each final at Cal's Edwards Stadium automatically advance to the CIF state championships on June 6-7 in Clovis.

  • NCS championship games, baseball and softball, May 30-31 -- Entering this week, the local teams still alive in the NCS playoffs were Berkeley's baseball team (Division I), Encinal's softball team (Division III), St. Mary's baseball team (Division IV), Head-Royce's baseball team (Division V) and St. Joseph Notre Dame's baseball and softball teams (Division V).

  • Maddie Baum, Piedmont girls lacrosse -- Baum scored four goals and passed for an assist in the Highlanders' 13-9 victory over Miramonte in the NCS Division II semifinals on May 20, then she produced four goals in Piedmont's 21-9 loss to defending champion Acalanes in the championship game on May 22.

  • Nico Hoerner, Head-Royce baseball -- Hoerner was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the Jayhawks' 10-0 victory over St. Vincent in a NCS Division V quarterfinal game on May 23.

  • Noah Bremer, Berkeley baseball -- Bremer first threw a six-hitter and allowed only one earned run while going 2 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs in a 7-2 upset of No. 4 seed California in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs on May 20. He then drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and pitched three shutout innings in a 2-0 victory over No. 5 seed Granada on May 24. Berkeley is the No. 13 seed.

  • Isabella Deatherage, Encinal softball -- Deatherage was 1 for 3 with a triple and all four Encinal RBIs in a 4-3, eight-inning victory over Eureka in a NCS Division III quarterfinal game on May 23.

  • Robert Hansen, St. Joseph Notre Dame baseball -- Hansen fired a two-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks as the Pilots beat Bentley 3-0 in a NCS Division V quarterfinal game on May 23. He also went 3 for 3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in a 7-0 victory over South Fork on May 20.

  • Chloe Jenkins, St. Mary's girls track and field -- Jenkins had the top times in the 400 meters (57.15 seconds) and the 800 (2:15.90) and also anchored two winning Panthers relay teams at the NCS Bay Shore Area Championships on May 24 in Castro Valley.

  • Kayla Robinson, El Cerrito girls track and field -- Robinson had the top time in the 100-meter low hurdles (14.34 seconds), and the second-fastest time in the 100 (12.24) and the 300 low hurdles (45.36) at the NCS Bay Shore Area Championships on May 24 in Castro Valley.
