St. Mary's, Berkeley fall in NCS playoffs

  • The St. Mary's High baseball team took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the North Coast Section Division IV championship game at Saint Mary's College on May 31, but those were the only runs the Panthers scored in a 7-2 loss to Justin-Siena. Max Goldstein hit an RBI double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Ultsch in the first inning for St. Mary's. Teammate Arlo Rudy was 2 for 3 for the Panthers. St. Mary's beat Arcata 5-3 in a semifinal game on May 28. Rudy and Andre Nnebe both had two hits, and Nnebe also had two doubles and drove in two runs. Berkeley fell to San Ramon Valley 4-0 on May 28 in an NCS Division I playoff semifinal that matched the 13th-seeded team (the Yellowjackets) against the No. 1 seeded team (San Ramon Valley).

    Pilots have hard time in NCS playoff losses

  • The St. Joseph Notre Dame baseball team advanced to the NCS Division V championship game, but was shut out 5-0 by Head-Royce on May 30. Zachary Alldridge had two of the Pilots' three hits, as they finished with a record of 18-10. In its semifinal game on May 28, the Pilots scored three runs in the top of the first inning and held off Branson 3-2. Elijah Fisher was 3 for 4 with a run scored, and teammate Colin Karch was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Pilots. The St. Joseph Notre Dame softball team fell 4-0 to Redwood Christian in an NCS Division V semifinal playoff game on May 28. Gina Bonardi was 2 for 3 for the Pilots, who finished the season with an 17-7 record.

  • CIF State Championships, track and field, Buchanan High, Clovis, June 6-7 -- The elite high school track and field athletes of the state converge on Clovis this weekend to vie for state championship titles.

  • Chloe Jenkins, St. Mary's girls track and field -- Jenkins won the 800 meters in a personal-record 2 minutes, 12.47 seconds, and also anchored the Panthers to wins in the 400 relay (47.62) and 1600 relay (3:47.04) as St. Mary's claimed the girls team title at the NCS Meet of Champions on May 31.

  • Kayla Robinson, El Cerrito girls track and field -- Robinson finished in the top three in a pair of individual events at the NCS Meet of Champions and advanced to the CIF state championships in both. She was second in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 14.32 seconds (wind-legal), and placed third in the 100 (12.44 wind-legal).

  • Kara Awakoaiye, Bishop O'Dowd girls track and field -- The sophomore qualified for the CIF state championships with a third-place finish in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles at the NCS Meet of Champions on May 31 with a time of 14.35 seconds (wind-legal).

  • Elijah Fisher, St. Joseph Notre Dame baseball -- Fisher was 3 for 4 at the plate with a run scored in the Pilots' 3-2 victory over Branson in an NCS Division V semifinal game on May 28.

  • Nico Hoerner, Head-Royce baseball -- Hoerner threw six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and also went 2 for 3 at the plate in the Jayhawks' 5-0 victory over St. Joseph Notre Dame in the NCS Division V championship game on May 30.

  • Destiny Smith-Barnett, Skyline girls track and field -- Smith-Barnett broke the meet record in the girls 200 with a time of 24.03 and also won the 100 in 11.67 at the Oakland Section championships at Skyline on May 28.
