DAMASCUS, Syria—Two massive explosions have rocked the heart of the Syrian capital, Damascus, sending thick black smoke in the air.

State-run news agency SANA says the explosions went off on Wednesday morning near the army command building. It says a fire has broken out in the area. There was no immediate word of casualties.

Ambulances were rushed to the site of the explosion near the landmark Omayyad Square and police have sealed off the area to traffic.
