The Union Pacific "Western Heritage Special" train, and its steam locomotive No. 844, are scheduled to depart Oakland (1408 Middle Harbor Road, near the Port of Oakland) about 9 a.m. Wednesday, rolling south through San Leandro to the Niles district of Fremont.

From there, it will head east on the Altamont Commuter Express line through Niles Canyon, Sunol, Pleasanton, Livermore, Altamont Pass and Tracy, scheduled to arrive about 11:30 a.m. today in Stockton.

Places to view it this morning include Jack London Square, the south edge of Niles, "downtown" Sunol, the ACE stations in Pleasanton, Livermore and Tracy, along Stanley Boulevard between Livermore and Pleasanton, and along Old Altamont Highway over the pass.

The train is scheduled to be on display at the Stockton ACE station, 949 E. Channel St., from 1 to 5 p.m. today and again from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the UP freight yard, 838 E. Eighth St. in Stockton.

Railfans and others can follow No. 844's progress through the Bay Area using global positioning, on UP's Web site (www.uprr.com). And the train's GPS system will provide Twitter transmissions, as well.
