Sir Francis Drake High School teacher Michael Wing will join a team of archaeologists in northern Finland in May to excavate a group of 5,000-year-old settlements on the shores of the Black Sea.
Wing, a ninth- and 10th-grade science teacher, is one of 18 teachers selected to participate in PolarTREC, an educational research experience in which teachers work closely with polar researchers.
The program is managed by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States and supported by the National Science Foundation. During the past three years, more than 40 teachers have participated in projects in Alaska, Antarctica, the Bering Sea, Greenland, Russia and Scandinavia.
