Font ResizeTim Fiock, a senior at Kennedy High School who contributed time and love in raising a puppy for Guide Dogs for the Blind, recently was pleased to see the dog graduate as a guide.
On Aug. 29, Philbin, a yellow Labrador retriever, was presented to graduating student Odie John Lofton, of Nevada, Iowa, in a formal ceremony at the Guide Dog campus in San Rafael.
Tim lives in Fremont with his parents, Bill and Gail Fiock, and brother Thomas. He is a member of the local guide dog puppy raising club, Tri-Valley Guide Dogs, led by Ellen Aguirre.
The winners of the 2009 Newark Days coloring contest, sponsored by The Argus, were:
Age 4-5: Adreana Mares, Newark, 1st place; Sophia Rollins, Newark, 2nd place; Sire-Matthew Rollins, Newark, 3rd place; Noah Ojeda, Newark, honorable mention.
Age 6-7: Sweta Malyala, Fremont, 1st place; Margaret Rollins, Newark, 2nd place; Marilyn Rollins, Newark, 3rd place.
Age 8-9: Ryan Sathianathen, Fremont, 1st place; Sahana Sridhar, Fremont, 2nd place; Gianna Watson, Fremont, 3rd place.
Age 10-12: Esther Snanadoss, Fremont, 1st place; Robert Saylor, Fremont, 2nd place; Carissa Saylor, Fremont, 3rd place.
First place winners were scheduled to ride in today's Newark Days parade. All winners will receive trophies and an all-day pass to the carnival rides. The awards are being presented in the Community Center, in the "Celebrating Theatre and Dance" theme
Two Fremont men, Army Pfc. David A. Steinert and Army Pfc. Sosefo V. Pousima, have completed nine weeks of basic combat training. Steinert received his basic training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla., and Pousima received his basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
Steinert is the son of David Steinert of Fremont, and Susan Tamberg of Antioch. He is a 1993 graduate of Washington High School.
Pousima, the brother of Liciola Pousima of Fremont, is a 2005 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School.
