Fencing along the steps of the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse will be replaced later this month, causing the closure of the stairs to the public weekdays, Point Reyes National Seashore officials said this week.
Large sections of chainlink fence replaced during the rehabilitation of the lighthouse in 2002 are deteriorating. The fencing was residential-grade chainlink and has been damaged by the severe marine environment.
The project is scheduled to begin the week of Oct. 12 and last four to six weeks. The stairs will be open on weekends and holidays during the work.
Due to deterioration of the barrier fencing and the failure of the post and anchors that support the handrail, the area has become unsafe for park visitors and employees, officials said.
