A man firing a handgun indiscriminately in front of a weekend house party sent two people to the hospital, Hercules police said Monday, but nobody will identify the gunman.

Reports of gunfire sent patrol officers from Hercules, Pinole and Richmond as well as Contra Costa sheriff's deputies flying to the 400 block of Turquoise Drive about 10 p.m. Saturday. They found 200 to 300 young people trying to leave the area as they shut down a raucous party.

"There were a lot of people in the house," Hercules police Chief Fred Deltorchio said. "It appears that the shooting happened when (the host) made someone leave. Apparently there were people of various factions present, and not all of them get along."

Witnesses said the gunman stood in front of the house and fired several rounds into the air and at the house.

One round hit an 18-year-old Hercules resident in the leg, and another hit a 16-year-old Rodeo resident in the buttocks.

Paramedics took both to hospitals, one by ambulance and the other by helicopter. Both were treated and have since been released, Deltorchio said.

Detectives continued to interview witnesses Monday morning but got less-than-stellar cooperation early in the investigation, police said.

A local party promoter organized the event at the residential property, Deltorchio said, apparently advertising the party via e-mail and social media. Police continue to investigate the origins of the party and whether

the hosts followed the law.

Records show that Hercules officers dispersed a large party at the same address Aug. 23.

Neighbors said they heard helicopters and sirens in the area Saturday night, and saw broken glass outside the home Sunday morning.

Deltorchio asks that anyone with information about the gunman or the dispute preceding the attack call Hercules police at 510-724-1111.
