CASTRO VALLEY — An 18-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of sexual battery on a female student near Castro Valley High School.
The 17-year-old girl had been walking to school near San Miguel and Lux avenues at 7:50 a.m. when a man got out of his truck, grabbed her from the side and touched her below the waist, Alameda County Sheriff's Office Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.
"She was able to spin away from his grasp and ran to Castro Valley High School to call for help," Nelson said.
The school district initially reported the incident as an attempted kidnapping. But Nelson said it will be up to the district attorney to determine if the man will be charged with attempted kidnapping.
The man has addresses listed in both Castro Valley and Oakland, said Nelson, but he refused to identify the man.
After the student reported the incident to school authorities, the campus deputy resource officer and school security patrolled residential areas near campus.
Shortly after the school district reported the incident to the sheriff's office, deputies spotted a truck that matched a description and pulled the vehicle over near the high school.
When the man got out of the truck, a bread knife dropped out of his jacket, Nelson said, adding that the vehicle's license plates had been removed and were found in the truck.
The man was arrested and taken to the Eden Township Substation in unincorporated San Leandro.
