Acalanes honors community members

The Acalanes school board honored this year's recipients of the Su Stauffer Friends of Education Award at its Oct. 21 meeting.

The award is given annually from the district and each school to outstanding volunteers from the community. It is named after Su Stauffer, a parent volunteer who helped organize foundations to support Lamorinda and Walnut Creek schools and advocated for music and arts to be included in the University of California admissions requirements.

This year's recipients were Judy Carney, for the district; Ina Paven, for Miramonte High School; Joni Avery, for Acalanes High School; Dave Pinkham, for Campolindo High School; and Cindy Gershen, for Las Lomas High School.

Campolindo Music presents fall concert

The Campolindo Music Department will present its fall concert Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Campolindo Performing Arts Center, 300 Moraga Road in Moraga.

The concert will feature performances by the symphony orchestra, symphonic and concert bands under the direction of Harvey Benstein. Works performed include Tchaikovsky's "Serenade for Strings;" Gustav Holst, "Second Suite for Band" featuring soprano Erika Henningsen; Frank Ticheli's "An American Elegy;" E.F. Goldman, "Chimes of Liberty March;" Puccini, "Nessum Dorma;" Hailstork, "New Wade'N Water;"and "Encanto"

LASF seeks items for eBay auction

The Lafayette Arts and Science Foundation is seeking "gently used" items for the group to sell on eBay. The proceeds will go to LASF, which supports Lafayette schools.

LASF will collect items from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Acalanes High School parking lot. Donations are tax-deductible.

Items they can accept include cameras, handbags, laptops, iPods and mp3 players, jewelry, housewares, event tickets and video game consoles.

Kids can swim, bike and run

Students of all ages are invited to show their athletic prowess at the NorCal Kids Triathlon next month.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m. Nov. 14 at Miramonte High School, 750 Moraga Way, Orinda.

Students will compete in swimming, biking and running events, and the course distances will be adjusted for age-appropriateness.

The competition will be divided by grade level — kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, sixth through eighth grade, and ninth through 12th grade, plus boys and girls in each group.

Students can participate as individuals or as part of a relay team. All three members of a team must be in the same age group.

An awards ceremony will be held at the school's football stadium following the competition.

The participation fee is $40 — $35 for a second child in the same family — for individuals and $100 for relay teams. A late fee of $10 will be charged after Nov. 6.

Proceeds benefit the Orinda Community Fund and youth programs, and the event is being held in honor of Joseph Loudon, a Miramonte junior who died after collapsing at a party in May.

Middle-schoolers to present 'Peter Pan'

Students at Orinda Intermediate School will perform "Peter Pan" six times, Nov. 10-14, with two separate groups of student actors each performing three shows.

Produced by special arrangement with Minneapolis-based Plays for Young Audiences, the director is Clive Worsley, Town Hall Theatre's artistic director; Kathy Simon is producer for the show which involved 78 OIS students and another 34 students on the technical crew.

Performances take place in the school's multipurpose room, 80 Ivy Drive in Orinda, on Nov. 10 at 4:30 p.m.; Nov. 12 at 4:30 p.m., Nov. 13 at 5 and 8 p.m., and Nov. 14 at 3 and 7 p.m.

Tickets are $6 for the Nov. 10 and 12 matinees (open seating, no reserved tickets); all other shows are reserved seating — $10 premier seating, $8 standard seating.

Raising middle-school-age daughters

Parents looking for ideas and help in raising a middle school-age daughter are invited to a panel discussion featuring moms from the community who have been there.

The Lamorinda chapter of the American Association of University Women will present "How to Raise a Strong, Independent Daughter and Survive — True Confessions of Mothers of Daughters" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School, 1010 Camino Pablo, Moraga.

The event is free and open to all and light refreshments will be served.
