A Diablo man jailed on domestic violence charges is accused of trying to get a fellow inmate to murder his wife.
Devin Doyle, 45, is accused of soliciting Shawn Paxton, 37, of Martinez, to commit and join in the commission of the murder of Shaena Doyle. Both are also charged with conspiracy.
Doyle and Paxton were already in Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez on unrelated charges before being arraigned on the new ones Nov. 6 in Superior Court in Martinez.
Details of the alleged murder plot are unclear from court documents. Court papers said the incident occurred Nov. 4. Court records document what appears to be a plan involving people on the outside to help bail Paxton — who had a list of instructions from Doyle — from jail.
Deputy District Attorney Barry Grove could not be reached Thursday to discuss the case. Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee, whose agency conducted the initial investigation, would not comment, saying his agency does not comment on cases after charges have been filed. Doyle's attorney, William Gagen of Danville, was unavailable this week.
Doyle's next court date is Dec. 7. Paxton, who was referred to a public defender, will be back in court Nov. 19. Both men are being held without bail. Neither has entered a plea to the latest charges.
Court records show the men had different paths to jail.
At the end of 2008, Doyle faced charges including domestic violence against his wife,
However, records show he has been back in and out of custody for making contact with his wife.
One petition to revoke his probation, filed in May, states, "The victim is extremely fearful and believes that she will be further harmed by the defendant."
Another court filing in July said Doyle fled from a court-ordered treatment program days after he was released from jail. His wife later called probation officers, saying Doyle had made at least 40 calls to her over the course of one weekend.
Paxton is jailed on a possession of stolen property charge after court records said he and a woman were found with someone else's prescription medicine and a prepaid credit card that was not theirs. That charge stemmed from a May incident in Walnut Creek.
