OAKLAND — A 4-year-old girl wounded in the back by an errant bullet fired from outside her West Oakland home this morning is in stable condition at a hospital, authorities said.
The shooting happened about 11:46 a.m. in the 800 block of Mead Avenue.
Sgt. Rick Andreotti said the girl was in a bedroom of the home when a bullet fired from outside went through a wall and struck her in the back below her right shoulder. There were other people inside, but no one else was hurt, police said.
Andreotti said police do not believe the house or anyone inside was the intended target of the gunman.
Andreotti said police found evidence at the scene that the shooting happened in the street several houses to the west. The gunman was gone by the time police arrived, and police could not find any signs that anyone else was wounded.
Police are not sure what the shooting was over, and no arrests have been made.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the gunman's arrest. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572 or 510-777-3211.
