OAKLAND -- A 51-year-old man was stabbed to death Tuesday night at an East Oakland apartment complex.
He's been identified by Oakland police as Oakland resident Melvin Murphy.
The stabbing happened about 10:15 p.m. in the 9300 block of Bancroft Avenue. Police Sgt. George Phillips said Murphy was at the complex visiting some people when he got into a heated argument with another man that turned physical and ended in the stabbing.
Phillips said police are not sure what started the argument. The stabber fled before police arrived and is being sought.
The killing is Oakland's 57th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there had been 68 homicides.
