A 67-year-old San Jose man died this morning after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing on northbound Highway 87 near Capitol Expressway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Santa Clara County coroner's office identified the man as Clifford Wallace Barnes of San Jose.
The CHP does not know why Barnes lost control of the motorcycle, according to officer Steve Griefer.
The incident was first reported to the CHP at about 4:08 a.m. A caller told the CHP that the motorcyclist fell off the bike before the crash. The rider and bike landed in the fast lane, the caller told CHP.
Griefer said the man's motorcycle was struck by two other vehicles.
Both lanes of northbound 87 at Capitol Expressway were closed for about three hours. The CHP reopened the lanes at 6:51 a.m.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The CHP is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call officer Tu Tran at 408-467-5400.
