Shooting victim found: Berkeley police reported the city's first homicide of the year Tuesday, when they found a man dead in the backyard of a Blake Street house.
Police spokesman Andrew Greenwood said police are not releasing the man's name. The man was pronounced dead at 1634 Blake Street when paramedics arrived a short time after 1 p.m., Greenwood said.
A woman who lives in an apartment building next door said she did not see anything, but heard several shots. Thinking it was fire crackers, she went about her business.
Several family members were at the home and being interviewed by homicide detectives on the scene.
