The state Coastal Conservancy on Thursday approved a $1 million grant to help develop the Bay Water Trail, a network of launching, landing and camping sites to kayak and canoe around San Francisco Bay.

The money will go to the Association of Bay Area Governments to plan and develop the water trail and promote safe boating practices that do not harm wildlife.

The conservancy has adopted a trail plan for 112 primary launch and landing sites, at least 95 which are already in use. Most are publicly owned.

The water trail is for nonmotorized boats, including rowboats, windsurf boards, whale boats, skulls, kite boards, kayaks and canoes.
