ANTIOCH -- A middle school art teacher is believed to have fled to Mexico after being accused of inappropriately touching a student and making lewd comments to him, police said.

Investigators were alerted Thursday and interviewed 63-year-old Park Middle School teacher Charles Redmond about acts involving an eighth-grade boy. The alleged touching was over the victim's clothing, police said.

Shortly after police began looking into the matter, Redmond left a note for his family and disappeared, said acting Capt. Leonard Orman.

Park administrators were made aware of the allegations the next day and followed the lead of police as they interviewed students and adults on campus, Antioch Unified Superintendent Donald Gill said in a prepared statement.

Antioch Unified has been fully cooperative with police, he said.

Redmond, who's taught at Park since 1984, is on leave with the school district and will remain on leave indefinitely pending the completion and outcome of the investigation, Gill said. In addition to art, Redmond taught yearbook and leadership classes, Park principal Didi Del Chiaro said.

A $100,000 arrest warrant has been issued for Redmond.
