CONCORD -- A man who stole a minivan Sunday night eluded capture after leading police on a chase from Concord to Pittsburg, and may have stolen a second vehicle to get away, police said.

A resident in the 3500 block of Cardinal Drive called police about 11:30 p.m. to report that his 1994 Mercury Villager minivan had been stolen, and about three minutes later officers spotted it on Port Chicago Highway near Bonifacio Street, said Lt. Robin Heinemann.

Upon spotting police, the driver fled on Willow Pass Road and got onto Highway 4, where the California Highway Patrol continued the pursuit. Pittsburg police took over when the minivan exited on Railroad Avenue while avoiding a spike strip, Heinemann said.

The vehicle crashed into a pole on a nearby dead-end street and the driver fled. However, a female passenger was taken into custody.

A search for the driver with a helicopter and police dogs was unsuccessful. Around the same time, a Pittsburg resident who lives near the crash site reported that his vehicle had been stolen and left the area, Heinemann said.

Police did not have detailed description of the driver. Anyone with information about the auto thefts can contact Concord police at 925-603-5836.
