CLAYTON -- The Clayton City Council on Tuesday will consider endorsing the Clayton Valley High School charter petition, which teachers submitted to the Mt. Diablo school district on June 8.

The school board must hold a public hearing regarding the petition by July 8 and must decide to approve or deny the petition by Aug. 8. If denied, the teachers can appeal to the county and state boards of education.

About 80 percent of the school's teachers signed the petition, which needed 50 percent plus one to move forward. In May, Clayton Council members unanimously agreed to support the charter school conversion "in concept," before seeing the final petition.

Now that the petition is available for public review, the Mayor David Shuey said he would to get the council's full support for it. The council agreed last month to loan the charter committee $8,500 for legal startup costs.
