A 15-month-old girl died Friday after falling into her family's backyard swimming pool in Richmond, police said.
The victim's mother called 911 at 1:23 p.m. after pulling her daughter out of the pool, in the 3000 block of Alta Mira Drive in the Fairmede/Hilltop neighborhood.
Richmond firefighters and police and paramedics from American Medical Response worked hard to save the child, and briefly restored her heartbeat, police said. But she died at the hospital later in the afternoon.
"The mother was watching a number of kids at the house," Detective Nicole Abetkov said. "She noticed that the girl was missing, and she hadn't seen her for a few minutes."
The toddler made her own way outside to an aboveground swimming pool and scaled a ladder up the side before falling in, police said.
Authorities don't suspect foul play, but police and the Contra Costa Coroner's Office will conduct a full investigation, police said.
"This is obviously a terrible tragedy and all the more reason to make sure your pool, and your home, is properly secured for little ones," Abetkov said. "Even at this age, kids can climb and get over things."
