The City Council, along with three other city boards, will meet with Broadway Plaza owners at a special meeting Tuesday to discuss the expansion of Walnut Creek's outdoor mall.
Macerich Co., which owns Broadway Plaza, has been holding community meetings over the past month to get residents' opinions about growth at the retail center. At Tuesday's special meeting, members of the council, planning, design review and transportation commissions will give their input on the proposed maximum addition of 300,000 square feet of retail stores.
Major changes to the center are likely to be discussed at Tuesday's meeting. For example, Macerich may seek to build 200 residential units at its site. The plan may also call for the demolition of an existing 200,000 square feet of retail space, then the rebuilding of that along with an additional 200,000 or 300,000 square feet of retail space, according to a meeting agenda report.
Macerich also seeks to close off most of Broadway Plaza to street traffic to create a promenade and plaza.
The City Council will have final approval within the next few months of a long-range master plan for development of the mall. No decisions will be made at Tuesday's meeting.
The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the third-floor conference room of City Hall, 1666 N. Main St.
