A Marine from Danville stationed in Afghanistan has died in combat, a coach at his old high school confirmed.
The death of Joshua Corral was announced to the crowd attending San Ramon Valley High School's home football game against Castro Valley on Friday. The student attended San Ramon Valley and has a sibling who's a student at the school, varsity football coach Marc Kessler said.
Corral's death had not been announced by the Department of Defense as of 10:30 p.m. on Friday.
Kessler said Corral was a 2010 graduate of the school and that he played freshman football. The coach said news of his death began to spread around the campus early in the day.
Corral was a popular student, Kessler said, one who was "charismatic and just a great, great kid. He loved everything about being a soldier. He was first in his class at boot camp. It's just a very sad thing."
Corral's death was announced during halftime of San Ramon Valley's playoff game against Castro Valley.
