RICHMOND -- An 8-year-old boy went to the hospital Monday night after a driver, apparently angry over a perceived roadway slight, shot into a family's car in the 3000 block of Birmingham Drive.

The victim remained in good condition at a hospital Tuesday morning, police Lt. Bisa French said.

"The driver conveyed signs of road rage and followed the victim's vehicle," French said. "The father was with his wife and two small children."

The trouble started about 10:30 p.m., when Richmond's ShotSpotter technology notified police of gunfire. As officers went to the scene, a 911 caller reported that the father was driving to the hospital.

The victim's car possibly cut off the gunman at the Hilltop Drive exit of Interstate 80, French said. On Birmingham, the older-model black Crown Victoria or similar "police-looking" car pulled alongside, and the driver fired several rounds at the family, hitting only the boy.

The shooter's car left immediately, and police are searching for it.
