Rockabilly royalty is heading our way.
The Polecats, one of the primary architects of the early '80s rockabilly revival, are coming to the Bay Area for two shows. The London act performs Thursday at the Uptown Nightclub (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) and Friday at the Blank Club (44 South Almaden Ave., San Jose).
Now, it might be tempting to think of the Polecats as just a lesser version of the Stray Cats, but vocalist Tim Polecat and his crew actually made some sensational rockabilly music during the band's heyday.
The group, which formed in 1977, is best remembered for a pair of cover songs -- fun versions of David Bowie's "John, I'm Only Dancing" and T-Rex's "Jeepster" -- as well as the singles "Rockabilly Guy" and "Make a Circuit With Me." The latter appeared in the 2008 Disney-Pixar animated film "WALL-E."
Anybody interested in learning more about the band should definitely pick up (or download) a copy of the 1981 major label debut "Polecats are Sound!"
Or, better yet, go see the group in concert this week. Showtime is 9 p.m. at the Uptown ($12-$15; 510-451-8100, www.uptownnightclub.com). This Charming Band and Texas Steve and the Tornados are also on that bill. Showtime is 9 p.m. at the Blank ($10-$12; 408-292-5265, www.theblankclub.com). Hayride to Hell and Raygun Cowboys are also on the bill.
